The Big Books of Snappy Lesson Plans at Step 3 achieve this through a column sort teaching structure. The primary focus of the column sort is a single sound.
A blank grid is drawn for the different spelling alternatives. Students generate example words with their teacher writing each word in the correct column until the columns are full. Students' attention is drawn to the position of the spelling pattern in each word. The session continues with the teacher choosing one alternative spelling pattern.
This column sort format of the Snappy Lesson incorporates work for the student at sound, word and sentence levels for both writing and reading, key features of the Snappy Lesson.
