Once the spelling alternatives for a sound have been taught through the Classic Snappy Lesson Plans at Step 3, the Big Books of Snappy Lesson Plans at Step 3 reinforce these spelling alternatives and help students to make the correct spelling choice.

The Big Books of Snappy Lesson Plans at Step 3 achieve this through a column sort teaching structure. The primary focus of the column sort is a single sound.

A blank grid is drawn for the different spelling alternatives. Students generate example words with their teacher writing each word in the correct column until the columns are full. Students' attention is drawn to the position of the spelling pattern in each word. The session continues with the teacher choosing one alternative spelling pattern.

This column sort format of the Snappy Lesson incorporates work for the student at sound, word and sentence levels for both writing and reading, key features of the Snappy Lesson.

Teachers and Teaching Assistants can use these plans for whole class teaching, for small group teaching and for one-to-one tuition.
